The F/A-18E Super Hornet is a supersonic fighter/attack aircraft capable of carrier operations. This advanced derivative of the F/A-18C/D Hornet entered service in 1999 and replaced the F-14 Tomcat starting in 2006. It will serve alongside the original Hornet. In 2007, Australia ordered Super Hornets to replace its aging F-111 fleet. The Super Hornet is a larger and more advanced version of the F/A-18C/D Hornet. An early concept was marketed by McDonnell Douglas as the Hornet 2000 in the 1980s. This concept featured a larger wing, longer fuselage for increased fuel capacity, and more powerful engines.
