Nikolay Mikhaylovich Przhevalsky (1839-1888) was a Russian geographer hailing from Poland who became infamous for leading Central and East Asia expeditions. Despite never setting foot in the fabled city of Lhasa, Tibet, he boldly ventured into uncharted territories such as modern-day Tibet Autonomous Region, Amdo (now Qinghai), and Dzungaria (present-day northern Xinjiang). His groundbreaking explorations greatly expanded European understanding of Central Asian geography, leaving a lasting legacy. Przhevalsky's discoveries also included several previously unknown species that now face extinction: the majestic Przewalski's horse, the rare Przewalski's gazelle, and the elusive Wild Bactrian camel.
