Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was born on March 31, 1809. He is a dramatist, novelist, and short story writer who rose to prominence in Russia. His work reflects Ukrainian culture's strong influence. As a key figure of Russian literary realism, Gogol's contemporaries admired him greatly. However, later critics argue that his writing contains romantic elements, with surrealist and grotesque undertones ("The Nose", "Viy", "The Overcoat," and "Nevsky Prospekt"). His early works were shaped by Ukrainian folklore and culture, as seen in "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka". Gogol's later writings exposed the corruption of the Russian Empire in "The Government Inspector" and "Dead Souls". Other notable works include "Taras Bulba", published in 1835, and the play "Marriage," released in 1842. His famous short stories, such as "Diary of a Madman", "The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich", "The Portrait" and "The Carriage", complete Gogol's impressive literary portfolio.
