Nike Smoke 1/12.4 Scale v2 Model Rocket
thingiverse
The Nike Smoke was designed to study horizontal winds in the upper atmosphere, developed by NASA in the 1960s using the Nike booster as a base. This scale model is a 1/12.4 replica that stands 468.5mm tall when completed and uses an Estes BT-55 body tube. Version 2 differs from version 1, requiring no painting at all. You will need the following parts to build this rocket: * 1 x BT-20, 127mm long * 1 x Engine hook or friction fit engine * 1 x 304.8mm Parachute * 1 x Shock cord * 2 x "UNITED STATES" decals that you will have to make and print out To build this rocket, follow these instructions: - Always test fit the parts first. - Make sure the nose cone fits loosely in the body tube but does not fall out when pointing downwards. - Use 5 minute Epoxy for the complete build. - Slightly spread a thin amount of epoxy glue inside the fin notch walls and then insert the printed fin. - Use the positioning tool for engine block placement and for engine hook slot position. - It is not necessary to glue the engine hook retainer in place, allowing you to remove the engine hook for a nicer static display model. - Be aware that due to heat from the motor, the retainer will shrink making it hard or impossible to remove again. - See picture for fin placement (complete rocket white, 3 fins red and one fin yellow). - Recommend placing some sort of protection inside the parachute compartment to keep the printed tube from ejection residue. - To ensure a good fit between the nose cone and fin, you may want to print the lower portion of the nose cone first and test fit it to the body tube. If too tight or too loose, scale the objects accordingly. - I've added pictures to aid in construction. This rocket flies great on B6-4 and C6-5 rocket engines. Please download the files only if you are going to start printing the parts because I might have done some required design tweaks/changes which will be noted below as revisions. I would love to see your results! If you find my contribution useful, please support my work by giving me a tip. Thanks, Leo Revisions: * 06.01.2019: First public release. * 20.01.2019: Added 2 part nose cone for printers that can't print the full length. * 20.01.2019: Added a scaled 2 square feet version of the fin. * 20.01.2019: Added prototype nose cone used on the maiden flight.
