Nike soars through the air, landing effortlessly atop a towering triangular pedestal as an eagle swoops beneath her feet. Crafted by Paionios of Mende from gleaming Parian marble, this magnificent figure was initially situated before the temple of Zeus, where the intrepid traveller Pausanias had witnessed it standing proudly in the mid-second century AD, only to be discovered lying fallen and abandoned years later.
