The room grew darker by degrees as dusk fell over the house, and the air took on a chill that only came with the end of summer's warmth. I got out of bed and made my way to the bedside table, my hand reaching instinctively for the familiar glow of the night light. It cast a comforting circle of illumination around me, like a beacon shining bright in the shadows that were growing longer by the minute. As I stood there, I felt a sense of security wash over me, as if the night itself was held at bay by the simple presence of this tiny source of light. And so I stood there for a moment, savoring the feeling, before reluctantly returning to my bed and drifting off into the night.
