Night by Michelangelo
myminifactory
Night is one of the four allegory sculptures representing the periods of day (dawn, daytime, dusk, night). She's easily recognizable by a star and moon diadem on her head, an owl nestled in the crook of her bent left leg and a bouquet of poppies resting on her left foot. The mask under her left hand is interpreted as mystery or a secret. Some speculate that Michelangelo intended it to be a veiled reference to his sexual orientation since homosexuality was illegal. Michelangelo depicted her with her head tilted down, resulting in her face usually being in shadow - another allegory of night.
