Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was a Russian novelist and short story writer of Ukrainian ethnicity who left an indelible mark on the literary world. His nationality has been debated by scholars, with some claiming him as their own, while others assert his connection to another culture. Gogol's contemporaries regarded him as one of the most prominent figures in the natural school of Russian literary realism. However, later critics have discovered a romantic sensibility in his work, infused with elements of Surrealism and the grotesque ("The Nose", "Viy", "The Overcoat," "Nevsky Prospekt"). His early writing was influenced by his Ukrainian upbringing, culture, and folklore. His later works satirized political corruption in the Russian Empire (The Government Inspector, Dead Souls), leading to his eventual exile. The novel Taras Bulba (1835) and the play Marriage (1842), along with the short stories "Diary of a Madman", "The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich", "The Portrait" and "The Carriage", showcase his most renowned works.
