Niche Statue of 'St Peter', Melrose Abbey
sketchfab
This sculpture stands out as a representation of St Peter, recognizable through its association with symbols typical for him: a book of scripture and the key to heaven. It was one of four statues originally positioned in niches on the West Gable tower of Melrose Abbey, situated in the Scottish Borders, alongside St Andrew, St Paul, and the Virgin Mary and child. Crafted in the early 15th century during Melrose Abbey's rebuilding after its destruction by Richard II in 1385, these sculptures endured a tumultuous history. Much of the abbey's sculpture was deliberately damaged and disfigured during the Scottish Reformation. However, this particular statue remained relatively intact, only to be removed and reproduced in the 1980s for preservation from weathering. It is now on display at the Commondator's House Museum within Melrose Abbey. For more information regarding visits to Melrose Abbey, please refer to our website. 1030 x 380mm MEL/scp/10 | Rae Project
