The September 11 attacks were a series of coordinated terrorist strikes carried out on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, by al-Qaeda operatives against targets in the United States. Four commercial airplanes were hijacked by 19 terrorists affiliated with Osama bin Laden's extremist network. Two planes crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan, New York City, while another plane hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. The fourth plane reportedly crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to overpower the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in the devastating attacks, including 2,753 civilians and 343 firefighters and police officers who rushed to the scene to rescue those trapped inside the burning buildings. Many more were injured, with some left permanently disabled by the trauma they endured that day. The World Trade Center's South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m., followed by the North Tower at 10:28 a.m. The impact of the crashes and subsequent fires caused widespread damage to surrounding structures, leaving many without homes or livelihoods in the aftermath. In response to the attacks, the United States launched the War on Terror, a global military campaign aimed at rooting out terrorist organizations and their supporters.
