The National Stadium of Japan is a multifaceted stadium under construction in Kasumigaoka, Shinjuku, Tokyo. It will be the main stage for the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the primary venue for track and field events at the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics. Initially proposed plans for the new stadium were revoked by Japan's Prime Minister ShinzÅ Abe in July 2015. In response to growing public discontent over increasing construction costs, a new bid was issued. In December 2015, renowned architect Kengo Kuma unveiled an innovative design to replace the original plan. The revised stadium is expected to be completed by November 2019.
