New Horizons bursts into orbit as a trailblazing interplanetary space probe, born from NASA's New Frontiers program. Spearheaded by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and the Southwest Research Institute, with renowned leader S. Alan Stern at the helm, this spacecraft soars into the cosmos in 2006. Its main objective is to execute a flyby study of the Pluto system in 2015, while simultaneously pursuing a secondary mission to pass by and examine one or more other Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) over the next decade. New Horizons becomes the fifth artificial object to break free from the Solar System's gravitational grasp, embarking on an unprecedented journey through uncharted space.
