Purkinje neurons, highly specialized and large, transmit signals directly to cerebellar nuclei, playing a key role in motor control and coordination by facilitating smooth and precise movements. These cells are known for their distinctive tree-like branching pattern, with numerous dendrites extending from the soma. They receive excitatory inputs from mossy fibers and inhibitory inputs from climbing fibers, allowing them to integrate information from multiple sources. Purkinje neurons fire action potentials in a slow but rhythmic manner, modulating the activity of target neurons in the cerebellar nuclei.
