The Falkenstein Castle is situated in Balsthal, Switzerland at an elevation of 595 meters above sea level. The castle's complex structure divides into two core areas, a Zwingeranlage and approach obstacles. A round main tower, believed to be a bergfried, dominates the western core area. The oldest parts of the castle are located in the eastern part, with foundations of a trapezoidal residential building. Archaeological findings also include remnants of a chapel and multiple economy and residential buildings. Garden terraces and signs of a modern-era gun bastion can be seen in the forecourt. Excavations uncovered at least four construction phases, with the outer bailey's dating uncertain. The other three construction phases were dated to the 11th and 12th centuries, the late 13th century, and around 1640. A second castle was built within a separate enclosure next to the first castle's remains. These two castles were later combined into one structure.
