Nesiur Skull From CT Scan (VCU_3D_5171)

This is the skull of a mummy named Nesiur who is currently on display at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in Dayton, Ohio. The cranium was extracted from the CT scan by Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Forensic Anthropologist Terrie Simmons-Ehrhart. According to Jill E. Krieg-Accrocco, Curator of Anthropology and Exhibitions, Nesiur was unearthed at the Deir el-Bahari site in western Thebes in 1922 by H.E. Winlock of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Deir el-Bahari is a location renowned for its mortuary temples and tombs situated along the west bank of the Nile River. Nesiur was discovered buried in a chamber carved into the floor of a brick chapel. Her coffin and style of mummification indicate that Nesiur lived during the 25th Dynasty (circa 700 BC).
