NES Controller

Released in 1985 across North America, the Nintendo Entertainment System drastically transformed the gaming industry as a whole, bringing it back from the brink of collapse following the devastating Video Game Crash of 1983. The controller for this groundbreaking system leveraged Gunpei Yokoi's innovative cross-shaped directional pad, originally developed for earlier handheld LCD games within the Nintendo Game & Watch series. In the mid-80s, Nintendo aimed to distinguish their system from its competitors by promoting the NES as a "household entertainment device," rather than simply a "videogame console." This approach is also evident in the controller's use of the D-pad, which replaced the more traditional arcade-like joystick commonly found on home consoles.
