The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is an iconic 8-bit home video game console created and produced by the renowned gaming company, Nintendo. Initially launched in Japan as the Family Computer on July 15, 1983, it later made its way to North America in 1985, Europe between 1986 and 1987, and Australia in 1987. In South Korea, it was known as the Hyundai Comboy and distributed by SK Hynix under the name Hyundai Electronics. As the best-selling console of its time, the NES revitalized the US video game industry after the 1983 crash, becoming a groundbreaking platform for gamers worldwide. Nintendo introduced a pioneering business model with the NES, licensing third-party developers to create and distribute titles exclusively for their platform. The NES paved the way for future consoles, eventually giving rise to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. In 2009, IGN crowned the NES as the greatest video game console of all time in their list of 25 top consoles, while PC Magazine ranked it second behind the Sega Dreamcast in their "Top 10 Video Game Consoles" feature.
