Nereid Statue

The statue likely depicts a Nereid, positioned within one of the intercolumniations of the Nereid monument. The draped female figure is shown running to the right. Her garment, an unbelted chiton with sleeves that appear continuous with a short diploidion reaching just below her breasts, is confined by narrow strings passing over her shoulders. In her right hand, she probably grasped part of the skirt and possibly also held part of a large mantle passing behind her back and over her left shoulder, which was held in her left hand. A sea bird floating above the water with its wings spread appears below the folds of the drapery.
