NeoPixel 7 Segment display
thingiverse
I designed a seven segment display for another project I was working on. Since the display might be useful to someone else, I broke it out into a 1, 2, 3, and 4 digit display. Don't print with supports because internal components will get damaged if you do. The design has small overhangs internally, but supports aren't needed anyway. Print them as shown, and the part will turn out fine. This seven segment display uses through-hole LEDs, specifically WS2811 or 12's that fit in the 8mm hole. I used these LEDs; they seem to work well so far. Out of the 90 I used, only two were duds. They're bright and function as expected. You can purchase these LEDs on eBay at https://www.ebay.com/itm/5-1000pcs-DC5V-Diffused-round-RGB-LEDs-WS2811-led-chips-RGB-F5-5mm-8mm-pixels/152637369405 Some code snippets are included to demonstrate how to use the LEDs. The code is written in C from the Arduino IDE, and it uses the NeoPixel Bus library since Adafruit's Neopixel library no longer supports ESPs. You can use the display without the lens on the front, but I prefer it with one for a more defined look. To make lenses, print the front part first, then attach a piece of plain white paper to the back using tape. Finally, place the cover over the LED holder. It's a simple process, and the result is much better than 3D printing lenses. I did try 3D printing lenses initially, but they don't work as well as the paper ones do. The photos might make it look washed out, but in person, it looks better. This seven segment display is released under "THE BEER-WARE LICENSE" (Revision 42), which can be found at https://www.thingiverse.com/kwg08/. As long as you keep this notice intact, you're free to use the file for non-profit purposes. If our paths cross someday and you find the display useful, consider buying me a beer in return.
