Neolithic stone axe reused as a weight, Orkney
sketchfab
This finely crafted Neolithic stone axehead has been skillfully repurposed as a weight by carefully pecking a line around one end. This clever transformation likely took place during the Viking era. The artifact was generously loaned to Orkney Antiquarian Society's Kirkwall Museum by Henry Scarth in the 1930s, where it initially joined the collection at Skaill House. Dimensions: length 139mm, breadth 59mm, thickness 32mm. Weight: 389g. Housed at the Orkney Museum, a treasure of the Orkney Islands Council, OM S.44. Photograph by Hugo Anderson-Whymark.
