This ancient pottery originated from techniques like coil and slab construction, with pots fired over open bonfires that yielded relatively low temperatures. Consequently, these 5,000-year-old vessels are extremely delicate. Despite their fragility, archaeologists continue to uncover them at an increasing rate in excavations throughout Leicestershire. The pot showcased here was donated to the Leicester Town Museum in 1855, although its exact discovery location remains unknown. Given its style, known as "Fengate," which is characteristic of Eastern England, it's possible that this relic was unearthed locally. As a result, it holds the distinction of being the oldest intact pot within the museum's collections.
