The first recorded mining on Alston Moor stretches back to the 12th century, with initial exploitation occurring at a relatively low volume and irregularly up until the 17th century. As of the 1690 discovery of the Rampgill Vein, significant ore extraction began taking place at Nenthead in the 17th century. By mid-18th century, Nenthead emerged as one of the primary mining areas for the London Lead Company. They solidified their leases as production reached its peak in the 1820s, only to gradually decline until the company surrendered its last Nenthead lease in 1882. The lease was subsequently acquired by the Nenthead and Tynedale Zinc Company, who were later succeeded by Veille Montagne Zinc Company in 1896.
