The 15.5 cm/60cal guns used by the Mogami class cruisers originated with engineer C. Hada's design, introduced in 1932 as a main armament option for B-class cruisers. Additionally, these weapons were deployed on Yamato and Musashi, both originally featuring four turrets. In a remarkable shift, four of the cruisers that initially possessed these turrets had them modified with twin 20.3cm guns instead, resulting in a conversion which ultimately led to the installation of modernised triple gun turrets in a distinctive diamond pattern on Yamato and Musashi. Initially arranged in superfiring positions above the main armament fore and aft, as well as in wing locations alongside each side respectively, two turrets from these ships had their guns relocated later - one pair on January 1944 for Yamato and another on April 1944 for Musashi. The removed wing mounts made way for added 12.7cm AA anti-aircraft gun systems during this period.
