Nelson's Column honors Horatio Nelson, a celebrated British naval hero killed at Trafalgar. The surrounding square is named for this battle. Construction on the column began shortly after Nelson's passing, supported by £1,330 in public contributions via the Committee of the Patriotic Fund. Thanks to widespread interest, funding escalated to £5,545 by 1838 during another fundraising campaign. At 46.5 meters tall, the structure hosts a 5.5 meter-tall Nelson statue atop its summit, totaling an impressive 52 meters in height.
