myminifactory
Nelson's Column stands tall in Trafalgar Square, Central London, honoring Admiral Horatio Nelson who fell at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Built between 1840 and 1843 to William Railton's design, this £47,000 monument rises from Dartmoor granite as a Corinthian column. The Craigleith sandstone statue of Nelson was crafted by E.H.Baily, while four bronze lions on the base, added in 1867, were designed by Sir Edwin Landseer. Four bronze relief panels decorate the pedestal, each 18 feet square, cast from captured French guns and depicting the Battle of Cape St Vincent, the Battle of the Nile, the Battle of Copenhagen, and Nelson's death at Trafalgar. The sculptors behind these panels are Musgrave Watson, William F. Woodington, John Ternouth, and John Carew.
