Nelson Knife (VCU_3D_1945)
sketchfab
According to Curator Tracey Neikirk, this special utensil crafted by the J. Russell Cutlery Company in Massachusetts features a unique shape that enables an amputee to rock the knife back and forth to slice their food with ease. Additionally, the long tines were designed for picking it up. The utensil was digitally preserved using a NextEngine Desktop 3-D scanner at the Isle of WIght County Museum in Springfield, Virginia on December 10, 2015. However, the initial scan contained some problematic elements. Fortunately, Forensic Anthropologist Terrie Simmons-Ehrhardt created a viable version on May 19, 2020.
