In 1879, outlaw leader Ned Kelly plotted to invent bulletproof armor for use during fierce shootouts with law enforcement officials in Australia. With the assistance of his Kelly gang partners Joe Byrne, Steve Hart, and brother Dan Kelly, a set of custom-made armor suits was fabricated using repurposed plough mouldboards, either donated by local sympathizers or forcibly taken from rural farms under cover of darkness. Over several grueling months, these worn metal boards were laboriously hammered into shape in an unrefined bush blacksmith's forge and polished to a shine. Though their cumbersome weight raised questions about practicality, the armor successfully deflected gunfire, earning cautious respect among Kelly gang members.
