Neapolitan Fisherman

Neapolitan Fisherman

myminifactory

The theme of this Neapolitan Fisherman piece is most likely inspired by Masaniello, a renowned Italian fisherman who led the 1647 Neapolitan revolution against Habsburg rule in Spain. Depictions of Masaniello and the "Neapolitan fisherman" type dominated Neapolitan and European art for centuries, often portraying a man in loose white attire, wearing a hat, and playing a guitar or similar instrument. This marble sculpture was created by Carl Gustaf Qvarnström, a Swedish sculptor and painter born in 1810. The piece accurately represents the image of a Neapolitan fisherman, sitting on fishing nets while relaxing, with his left hand holding an instrument. The design was crafted from Parian marble by Gustavsberg, a Swedish company specializing in art and household items, before being gifted to the museum by the last owner of Gustavsbergs Factories. These 3D scans were produced using an Artec Eva, aiming to create a digital representation as close to the original as possible. However, due to inaccessible areas and deviations from the original, these presented scans should not be considered duplicates. Photography credit: CC BY SA Nationalmuseum / Gustavsbergs Porslin AB
