Andrea Pisano, born in Pontedera in 1290, is renowned for his exceptional skills as an Italian sculptor and architect, also known as Andrea da Pontedera. While residing in Florence, Pisano crafted numerous significant works of marble sculpture that demonstrate a strong influence from Giotto's style. In 1340, he succeeded Giotto as Master of the Works at Florence Cathedral, where he created a series of reliefs possibly designed by his former teacher. These include a double band of panel-reliefs executed for the grand campanile, featuring subjects such as the Four Great Prophets, the Seven Virtues, the Seven Sacraments, the Seven Works of Mercy, and the Seven Planets. The duomo showcases Pisano's other notable works in marble from his Florentine period. In 1347, he took on the role of Master of the Works at Orvieto Cathedral, a project initiated by Lorenzo Maitani. These and the aforementioned doors are Pisano's only known creations. A pioneer in modern art, Pisano played a crucial role in breaking free from Byzantine influence. His life came to an end in 1348.
