It can be used with a Brannock Device to gather valuable information about a foot, aiding in accurate shoe fitting. Using these devices is not covered here. If you're unfamiliar with naviculometers, you likely don't need one. The markings indicate height above the floor in millimeters. The red and white prototype shown is an earlier version created by changing filaments for increased contrast on numbers. (Blue spots on the white face are painter's tape that didn't release cleanly from the print.) The pink version available here is the final model, without the filament change.
