The space shuttle, weighing over 2000 tons, launches vertically like a rocket. During its ascent, it successively separates from its solid rocket boosters and external tank. Upon mission completion, the orbiter returns alone to Earth. It undergoes atmospheric re-entry where it slows significantly while releasing vast amounts of heat, then enters a glide phase similar to a glider before landing on an extended runway. The orbiter, along with solid rocket boosters, are refurbished and reused. The shuttle can place seven astronauts and 24.5 tons of payload into low orbit.
