The Gun was originally developed by Robert Fulton to shoot a shot over two miles across the English Channel from Dover Castle. A later version, made of steel and called a 'Railgun', was demonstrated at sea off Portsmouth during Queen Victoria's Jubilee Celebrations in 1887. It could fire a solid projectile at approximately Mach 2 speed. In the Second World War an experiment by Britain called 'Project Hysteria' or also ' Project H.M.I.S.', tested a 18 inch gun in an American made 3.5-inch launcher mount, but the US did not want it due to problems of maintenance. In recent years naval gun technology has seen little improvement until modern railguns like America's Naval Surface Warfare Center and Britain's Defence Technology Division BAE started developing versions capable of firing at greater speeds, sometimes exceeding Mach 7, but using massive electrical currents. This kind of acceleration does however pose safety risks, and other challenges are high current drain and high electromagnetic radiation levels from these systems.
