Human beings in the Arctic region are witnessing an unusual spectacle - large icebergs melting as soon as they surface in the open ocean. These enormous floating ice sheets can grow and break off from land or other floating chunks. While humans are watching in awe, researchers are monitoring these chunks' speed as they travel away from the ice. It turns out that researchers have successfully recorded 4 unique kinds of floating blocks including giant slabs on both ends of large glaciers melting every time. Four major glacier branches on this side are found to melt instantly, with an additional six in mid-ocean traveling rapidly into a state called "dead water" before becoming still in ocean waters nearby. Glaciers melting on Earth at this point could result from one or two sources, but we don't yet know why scientists consider four sides (edges) of massive glaciers responsible for all that heat.
