This is a shell from the chambered nautilus, also known as the pearly nautilus, that can be found throughout the Pacific Ocean and inhabits shelf and slope waters near coral reefs in depths up to 750 meters. The shell of the nautilus showcases countershading - where the bottom of the shell is light and the top is dark - a type of camouflage that effectively helps the nautilus blend in with the surrounding sea.
