Jewish ritual handwashing involves pouring water over the hands while reciting a formula of praise to God and acknowledging His oneness. Hand washing occurs multiple times throughout the day in the Mishna. It serves to prepare one for the prayers. When eating, touching sacred items, before studying religious texts or going into prayer one performs a specific series of movements that result in hand cleaning. A typical process is as follows: one makes sure the hands are above the navel and places both feet at an angle to create sufficient distance between them, turns the tap off completely using one's wrist or with one hand under one elbow, cups the palm and splashes water against both sides. With one hand on top of the other they sprinkle water down onto the first knuckles of all fingers and then pour out small drops to be left for rinsing each part before cupping once again then throwing over wrists in front until the last droplet.
