Students were tasked with designing a Native American home that accurately reflected the time period. They included both structural and landscaping elements to showcase their knowledge of Native Americans. Students worked on TinkerCAD, recreating typical types of homes such as adobes, pueblos, and long houses. Print Settings Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer: MakerBot Replicator (5th Generation) Rafts: Doesn't Matter Supports: Yes Notes: *Tips & Tricks: • After students design their homes, ensure each home has a solid base underneath it. A square "floor" on each design will keep student's creations as one solid piece. • Before printing, review each student's design to ensure printability. Check for correctly layered and designed objects to avoid floating parts. • Printing multiple homes at once saves time and allows the printer to run continuously. Post-Printing Mapping Homes After Native American homes were printed, students placed their creations on a US map to show where they were built. How I Designed This TinkerCAD Designs Students logged into TinkerCAD to create their Native American homes. Step 2 In class, students discuss similarities and differences of how different tribes built their homes and physical characteristics. Step 3 Students choose a type of tribal home that interests them most and create a drawing depicting architectural and landscapes of that Native American culture. This serves as their draft for the 3D design. Step 4 After the student's draft is approved by the teacher, they can begin working in TinkerCAD. Step 5 Students log into TinkerCAD and start creating their model of the Native American home they chose. Step 6 Once students finish, the teacher ensures that the creation has all components and is ready for printing. Duration of Lesson After learning about the Native Americans unit, the actual 3D modeling part took students two 30-minute computer lab times. Preparation Students need to know: Real World Connection: The pueblo was built by American Indians in the Southwest either inside caves or on large cliffs. Homes were made from bricks mixed with adobe clay, sand, grass, and straw, then set in the sun to harden. Clay rooms were built on top of each other, sometimes as high as 4 or 5 stories tall. Students also need a TinkerCAD account and know how to group items and create holes. Rubric and Assessment By the end of the project, students should have designed a Native American home that represents how people lived. They get full credit on their 3D creations if they ensure both structural and agricultural features are included.
