The National Palace was commenced in May of 1944 in the Dominican Republic capital, spearheaded by prominent engineer Guido D'Alessandro. This project entailed drafting blueprints for an enormous undertaking situated on a sprawling 25,000 square meter plot, from which a panoramic vista over Santo Domingo unfolded as the city started to grow at a slow yet steady pace. Measuring a staggering 18,000 square meters in size, this colossal structure appears uniformly elegant and features impeccable geometric precision, primarily composed of orthogonal shapes that add to its refined aesthetic. As an architectural masterpiece steeped in neoclassical influences, its design exhibits undeniable European undertones and an evident accent. When it came to costs, an estimated 1.5 million pesos was set aside for construction, thanks to authorization by the Dominican Republic's President Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina who drew from excess funds within the 1943 budget.
