The NASA MRRS involves fixing socket hubs to areas which connect various length rail sections. The angles of the rails can be adjusted to the desired position within the socket then locked in via a set screw. The sphere at the end of the rails are intended to be friction fitted into the sockets, so it isn’t necessary to hold the rail while tightening the set screw. Alternately, the socket hubs may be positioned such that a particular rail is flexible enough to be fastened to a hub on one plane, then a connecting hub on a neighboring plane so that a custom freeform rail could be generated quickly via a parametric operation, then 3D printed.
