A highly detailed model of the Altair spacecraft, Lunar Surface Access Module, or LSAM is available. The model comes with high-resolution textures, including Photoshop files with precise UV overlays. The Altair spacecraft, previously known as the Lunar Surface Access Module or LSAM, will be a key component of NASA's Project Constellation, used by astronauts for lunar landings planned to begin around 2019. The spacecraft will serve both lunar sortie and lunar outpost missions. On December 13, 2007, NASA officially renamed its Lunar Surface Access Module the Altair, inspired by the 12th brightest star in the northern hemisphere's night sky, Altair in the constellation Aquila. In Latin, "Aquila" means eagle, linking it to Apollo 11's Eagle crewed lunar lander. The landers used on the Apollo missions were called Lunar Modules and often referred to as Lunar Landers or LEMs, although "Lunar Excursion Module" was the original designation of the LM. The name change occurred due to public perception that "excursion" meant a picnic. Before announcing the Altair name, reports suggested other names had been considered by NASA.
