NASA Lunar Regolith Sampling Conceptual Design
grabcad
The primary objective of this design is to offer essential features in the simplest possible form. The open-ended "barrel" at one end allows another sub-system on the lander to load raw samples. These samples are categorized into three sizes: fine (<5mm), goal particles (5-20mm), and oversized particles (>20mm). The first two categories are assessed independently, with a decision made whether to keep or discard the sample. The third category is automatically rejected during processing. A reversible brush-less DC motor paired with a high reduction gearhead was selected for its power efficiency and simplicity. Operating at 6000rpm, it delivers low controllable speed and increased torque (~2Nm). An optional vibration device may be needed to help move lunar regolith material through the barrel, which can fit within the mass and power budget. The total mass, excluding fasteners, is 409g, with a potential reduction of 50% for the barrel alone.
