The Extravehicular Mobility Unit is an independent, anthropomorphic spacesuit that provides essential environmental protection, enhanced mobility, reliable life support, and clear communications for astronauts conducting extra-vehicular activities in Earth's orbit. Developed in 1981, this two-piece semi-rigid suit is currently one of two EVA spacesuits used by ISS crew members, with the other being the Russian Orlan space suit. NASA's Space Shuttle astronauts previously relied on it until the end of the Shuttle program in 2011.
