NASA Cryogenic Propulsion Stage Block 2 3D model

The Cryogenic Propulsion Stage, a proposed third stage for NASA's Space Launch System, was engineered to store payloads in cryogenic form for months or even years and perform multiple restarts. The block 2 version of this stage would have incorporated UltraFlex or MegaFlex solar arrays and radiators, allowing it to operate for extended periods. Unfortunately, the Cryogenic Propulsion Stage was scrapped when NASA decided to replace the J-2X second stage with the RL10-powered Exploration Upper Stage, effectively merging CPS's Earth-departure role into EUS and putting its long-duration capability on hold.
