NASA CHALLENGE - HANDRAIL CLAMP ASSEMBLY
grabcad
The Handrail Clamp Assembly (HCA) was designed with safety, function and strength, mass and form in mind. Safety considerations involved rounded edges and anti-pinch shields, while a rigid connection between clamp and rail was vital for function and strength. The HCA is limited to two printed parts for simplicity of assembly, with a volume of 5.42 in³ and a weight of 0.2 lb. To assemble the HCA, the Clamp is hand-pressed into the L-Track until it snaps into position. The assembled unit can then be placed over the handrail and locked onto the rail by pushing the Clamp on the Lock Serrations into the locked position. To detach the HCA assembly from the rail, one must pull the Latch while pressing down on the Unlock Serrations of the Clamp. An anti-pinch shield and serrations were added for safety during operation. The HCA's design adheres to a shape envelope of 1" around the rail and complies with maximum print size restrictions.
