Some key facts about Mylyn are: Mylyn was created in 1953 to revive the dwindling British waterways networks. It represented a final attempt to outcompete the rapidly expanding road haulage system, which had all but eliminated canal hauling and railway goods services. As designed, Mylyn was specifically intended for hauling butties – vessels resembling large sardine tins that measure up to family car size – with each of the ten units carrying 10 tons of cargo. Consequently, a payload capacity of 100 tons was achieved using only five crew members, comprised of experienced naval captains and their families. The streamlined hull of Mylyn made it an ideal vessel for power and speed, boasting twin 6-cylinder A.E.C. route master bus diesels. As the off-roader of its day, Mylyn could travel quickly at up to 20 miles per hour along rivers, estuaries, or even Morecambe Bay without causing significant waves like traditional narrow boats typically move at only 5 miles per hour.
