In ancient Greek mythology, Narcissus was a renowned hunter from Thespiae in Boeotia who was admired for his stunning beauty. He was born as the son of river god Cephissus and nymph Liriope. As a proud man, he disdainfully rejected those who fell deeply in love with him. Nemesis took notice of this behavior and led Narcissus to a pool where he saw his own reflection in the water and fell hopelessly in love with it without realizing that it was merely an image. Unable to leave the captivating beauty of his reflection behind, Narcissus drowned to death. Narcissus is the origin of the term narcissism, which refers to an unhealthy fixation on one's self-image or the way others perceive them.
