In Greek mythology, a legendary hunter from Thespiae in Boeotia earned fame for his captivating good looks. He was the offspring of the river god Cephissus and the nymph Liriope, but he was also infamous for his arrogance. Narcissus believed himself to be superior to those who admired him, often looking down on them with disdain. Nemesis took notice of this haughty behavior and cleverly lured Narcissus to a tranquil pool, where he caught sight of his own reflection in the water. Entranced by the beauty staring back at him, Narcissus fell deeply in love with the image, unaware that it was merely an illusion. Unable to tear himself away from his own captivating appearance, Narcissus ultimately met his demise in the pool. The myth of Narcissus has given rise to the term narcissism, a condition characterized by an unhealthy fixation on one's own reflection or image as perceived by others.
