One minor issue with Lulzbot printers is that when the filament spool is mounted on the printer, the filament label faces toward the back. The label can't be read while it's being used. One day a print of black PLA filament was overheated on our shared printer because the wrong type of filament was used. It stank up the room with the smell of burning PLA, and possibly gummed up the hot end a bit. So this holder for a replaceable filament label / sample was made. The holder snaps onto the Lulzbot Mini, and holds a label printed from the same filament that's mounted on the printer - that way the label also functions as a sample of a print made with that filament. Keep the label stored with the filament, and when you mount the filament, slide the corresponding label into the holder. That way, you'll always know what's mounted on the printer. You can also use this design to print your name, that you slide into the holder when you start a print. That way everybody knows who's print is (left) on the printer, so they don't have to ask around. October 30, 2016: The ABS text for the Lulzbot Mini was added. Print Settings Printer Brand: LulzBot Printer: Mini Rafts: No Supports: No Notes: The holder has a closed end and an open end. Print the holder on-end (see the photos), with the closed end on the printer bed. To make the lettering easier to read, I painted the surface of the letters with a black indelible marker (a Sharpie marker). How I Designed This I designed the holder to snap onto the lower-right part of the printer frame (see the photos). The design has three parts: 1) the holder, 2) the base for the label, and 3) the text of the label. In FreeCAD, extruded text was created - see this all3dp tutorial for details. Then, again in FreeCAD, I fused the base with the extruded text to create the PLA label. You'll need to create your own labels for other types of filament. I added 3 important temperatures to the label: the hot-end temperature, the bed temperature, and the cool-down bed temperature for removing prints from the bed. These numbers are specific to the PLA and printer I'm using.
