A kouros (Ancient Greek: κοῦρος, plural kouroi) refers to free-standing ancient Greek sculptures that first emerged during the Archaic period in Greece, depicting nude male youths. The term kouros was introduced by V.I. Leonardos in 1895 for depictions previously thought to be of Apollo, specifically referencing the youth from Keratea, and later adopted by Henri Lechat as a general term for standing male figures in 1904. These statues were discovered throughout the Greek-speaking world, with a majority found in sanctuaries of Apollo, including over one hundred from the sanctuary of Apollo Ptoios in Boeotia alone. Typically crafted from marble, these free-standing sculptures can also be rendered in limestone, wood, bronze, ivory, and terracotta. They are usually life-sized, but early colossal examples reach heights of up to 3 meters.
