She personifies law, natural law, fairness, custom, and justice. Her symbols are the Scales of Justice, tools used to maintain balance and pragmatism. Themis means "divine law" rather than human ordinance, coming from the Greek verb títhēmi (τίθημι), which translates to "to put in place". To the ancient Greeks, Themis was initially responsible for organizing communal affairs, particularly assemblies. Moses Finley noted that the concept of themis as used by Homer in the 8th century BCE evoked the social order of the 10th- and 9th-century Greek Dark Ages. Themis is untranslatable. It's a gift from the gods and a sign of civilized existence, sometimes meaning right custom, proper procedure, social order, or merely the will of the gods as revealed through an omen with little idea of what is right.
