At the National Aeronautics and Space Admin's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, investigations were carried out on flat-plate flaps without wing cutouts as well as flaps with Clark Y sections that had corresponding cutouts made in the wings. These tests evaluated various flap deflections, chordwise positions, and gaps between flaps and airfoil contours. The results indicated that the drag was slightly lower when using flaps with an airfoil section on the wing. Aileron effectiveness was deemed satisfactory with a 20% wing chord gap and a flap-nose location at 80% of the wing chord behind the leading edge. Airflow was smooth, and buffeting was negligible in these experiments.
